EC recommends Latvia curb budget deficit to 3% of GDP by 2012 and supports allocation of second part of loan

European Commission (EC) today, on July 2. recommended that the Council set the year 2012 as the deadline for Latvia to reduce its budget deficit below 3% of gross domestic product, according to an announcement, made by the EC. Separately, the EC also decided to release the EUR 1.2 billion (LVL 0.84 billion) second installment of the European Union (EU) loan to Latvia to support the economy stabilization program.

Towards common European energy market

On 1 July 2007, Lithuania and Latvia have announced a program for the full liberalization of their energy markets. Estonia has negotiated with the EU the conditions concerning its open energy market. The BC discussed this and other important issues in development of the Baltic energy markets with the heads of the national energy utilities in the three Baltic states: Sandor Liive, Board Chairman of the Eesti Energia; Karlis Mikelsons, Board Chairman of Latvenergo; and Rymantas Juozaitis, Director General of Lietuvos Energija.

Trade Unions in Latvia: problems and perspectives

Arranging and convening round tables on contemporary EU-Baltics issues have become a tradition between our Baltic Course magazine and the Baltic International Academy in Riga, Latvia. The recent one, which took place on 21 November this year, was devoted to an interesting and urgent socio-political problem, i.e. the role, functions and developmental perspectives for the trade unions in the Baltics and in Latvia, in particular. A short resume of the issues under discussion at the round-table is presented below.
