Lithuanian government broadly agrees on guidelines for 5G development
“The draft has been prepared in view of the objectives set forth for the European Union’s electronic communications sector for the period until 2025… We seek to establish a legal base and to make sure that the development [of 5G] in Lithuania is regulated by the state, that the state has leverages in terms of legal regulation, is able to control, ensure supervision and gradual development,” Transport Minister Jaroslav Narkevic said at the meeting.
Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius noted that preparations to roll out the technology should also include the Ministry of Foreign Affairs due to new political aspects involved.
In particular, Lithuania planned to sign a memorandum on 5G with the United States and perhaps with other countries, he explained.
Draft guidelines on 5G development stipulate that the rollout of the technology in Lithuania should be launched next year. This year, the country should assign radio frequencies and announce a 5G-related spectrum auction.
The Communications Regulatory Authority (RRT) told BNS that it was holding talks with Russia on frequency bands and added that it would be clear in August whether the auction would be held this year.
Pursuant to the draft, 5G network should be launched in at least one of Lithuania’s five largest cities (Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda, Siauliai or Panevezys) by 2022 and should be available in all those cities by 2023.
By 2025, the 5G network should cover urban territories, international land transport corridors (Via Baltica, Rail Baltica) and other highways, main railway lines, airports and seaports.
