More people have expressed the wish to become Estonia's e-residents in the first six months of the project than expected – the predicted number of applications for this year was already exceeded by two times by the start of July, Estonian economy and communications ministry reported LETA.

Initially the target was set that by the end of 2015, 2,000 applications from foreigners, who wish to become Estonia's e-residents would be submitted, but by the beginning of July, 3,816 had already been received.

Estonian economy and infrastructure minister Kristen Michal said that almost all bigger international media channels have repeatedly covered the unique in the world idea of e-residency, introducing Estonia as innovative country, where the economic environment does not stop at borders. "This is a new and important market for our businesses, when we have in the coming years, for example, 30,000 e-residents, then an estimated 60 million euros is channelled to the economy from this. A state does not often have such an opportunity, but here we can create a new market for our businesses and bring customers here virtually," said Michal.

Last week, the cabinet discussed the new action plan of the e-residency program "10 million e-Estonians", which provides that in the following three years, Estonia will have up to 40,000 new virtual residents. Additional investments can boost this to 60,000 by the end of 2017.
