Freight volumes up 0.6% in Lithuania in H1

Some 81.3 million tons of freight were transported in Lithuania by all means of transport in the first half of 2020, up 0.6% from January-June, 2019, writes LETA/BNS.

In the second quarter alone, freight volumes went down by 2.6% to 41.454 million tons, Statistics Lithuania, the country‘s statistics office, said on Monday.


In the first half of this year, compared to the same period last year, the volumes of freight transported by road rose by 5% to 52.796 million tons, and those transported by rail fell by 9.7% to 24.279 million tons.


In the second quarter alone, the volumes of freight transported by road inched down 0.3% to 27.167 million tons, and those transported by rail rose 4.2% to 1.726 million tons.


Freight volumes transported by air jumped 9.7 times to 1.5 millions tons in the first half of this year, and jumped 17.6 times to 1.4 million tons in the second quarter. The significant increase was mainly affected by the demand for PPE and other goods due to the coronavirus.
