The overpass will be built next to the historical viaduct, whereas the heritage value of the latter will be preserved to the greatest possible degree, Eesti Raudtee said. The appearance of the support walls will be preserved and the new overpass will be designed to match the surrounding urban space as well as take into account the historical view from Paldiski Road to the Old Town.

"The construction of the viaduct is the first stage in the construction of an additional main road between the Tallinn and Kitsekula stations. Both the viaduct and the new main road will significantly increase the eastbound and south-westward capacity of the Balti Jaam train station and ensure a more flexible schedule for trains arriving at the station and departing from it," Riho Vjatkin, head of the construction service at Eesti Raudtee, said in a press release.

Greater capacity and flexibility enable passenger transport operators to add additional departures on each of their route, he added.

Member of the management board of Leonhard Weiss OU Indrek Kaliste said that the project is important and interesting both from the urban space perspective as well as in terms of engineering and will improve rail traffic. The construction also involves other parts of railway infrastructure, such as overhead lines and control systems.

The planned completion time of the viaduct is Dec. 31, 2021.
