BC, Tallinn, 27.05.2020.Print version
Tallinn Airport has concluded an agreement with the companies KMG Inseneriehituse AS and Verston Ehitus OU on construction works to be carried out as part of stage two of the works on the airside area of the airport, cites LETA/BNS.

The cost of the works is 24.8 million euros. Half the necessary amount will be provided by the EU Cohesion Fund, the state-owned airport company said on Wednesday.

Preparations for the construction work will start in June and the works are to be completed by the end of 2021. The works to extend the airside area will not entail significant restrictions for the airport's operation.

The airport company's CEO Riivo Tuvike said that in aviation, plans are made for ten and more years in advance. "Even though we have had to reduce investments by 10 million euros due to the coronavirus crisis, we nevertheless decided to move forward with the construction works on the airside area because the development will ensure the competitiveness of the Tallinn airport for a time when air traffic has been restored all over the world," Tuvike said.

During the first stage of the project carried out in the years 2016-2017, the existing surface  structure of the runways dating back 20 years was reconstructed, the landing strip was extended and the system of taxiways and the apron area improved. Under the same project, the airport's existing lighting system was replaced with LED systems and higher category approach light and navigation systems installed.

In the second stage of the project concerning the airside area, extension of the apron area will continue in the southern part of the airport's territory and the establishment of rainwater systems will be continued to mitigate rainwater related problems in the eastern portion of the airport.

The works also include the completion of the construction of the engine testing area, around which noise barriers meeting valid requirements will be installed. In addition, the project  includes the construction of access and perimeter roads and a southern bypass road.
