Estonia to develop road network for EUR 190 mln in 2020

The Estonian Road Administration is set to spend 190 million euros of budgetary funds for the development of the road network this year, to which 25 mln euros of external funds will be added, informed LETA/BNS.

Said amount includes 10 mln euros to be allocated additionally for the development of the road network under the supplementary budget in accordance with a proposal made by the  government last Friday.


The director general of the Road Administration, Priit Sauk, said that where last year saw a new record in investments in road construction, this year the country is about to continue almost at the same pace. 


He said the purpose of the investments is also to support faster recovery of the economy when the crisis ends.


Sauk said that work on all sites will be started and completed in accordance with the national road maintenance plan.


Construction and repair work is to be carried out on 1,921 kilometers of state roads and 48 kilometers of new roads will be built during 2020. The biggest increase has taken place in the amount of work to cover gravel roads with asphalt, which is to be performed on 171 kilometers of road, nearly 100 kilometers more than last year.


Reconstruction is to be carried out on 107 kilometers of road in total. Surfacing work is to be performed on 1,092 kilometers and regenerative repair on 231 kilometers of road. Plans are also for 39 places posing a traffic hazard to be liquidated and 19 bridges to be repaired. In addition to surfacing work on 171 kilometers of gravel roads, regenerative repair is to be performed on 272 kilometers of existing gravel roads.


The biggest site of road work this year is the Voobu-Mao section of Tallinn-Tartu road, which is to be completed in 2022 for a cost of 60 mln euros. 


The Vao junction on Tallinn's eastern boundary to be completed by the end of next year will cost 20 mln euros. Reconstruction of the Romeda-Haljala section of Tallinn-Narva road into a 2+2 road will cost 16.5 mln euros and work there will be completed by the end of this year.
