Helsinki port continued to be Europe's busiest passenger port in 2019

The port of Helsinki continued to be the busiest passenger port in Europe last year with 12.2 mln ship passengers moving via the port during the 12 months, informed LETA/STT.

The number of passengers was bigger by roughly one percent than in 2018, the port company announced.


Helsinki has held the title of Europe's busiest passenger port for three successive years now.


Cargoes totaled 14.4 mln tons, 2% less than the all-time high recorded for 2018.

The number of cruise ship passengers meanwhile hit a new record at 603,500 passengers, marking an increase of 16 percent over the preceding year.


Altogether 8.9 mln passengers traveled by ship between the capitals of Finland and Estonia during 2019, nearly one percent more than in 2018. Passengers of the Helsinki-Tallinn service accounted for close to 77% of all passengers of regular services at Helsinki port.


Passengers on the Helsinki-Stockholm route numbered 2.3 mln, about 1%  less than in 2018, while the number of passengers on the Helsinki-St. Petersburg route dropped 6.5% year over year to 200,000.


The Helsinki-Travemunde service was used by 158,000 passengers, 4.6% more than in 2018.
