The largest FDI in Lithuania – from Sweden and Estonia

Statistics Lithuania and the Bank of Lithuania publish provisional data on foreign direct investment for III quarter 2019.

  • In III quarter 2019, the flow of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Lithuania amounted to EUR 573.1 mln, and compared to the respective period of 2018, increased by 20.8%. Reinvestments accounted for 73.2% of total FDI (EUR 419.7 mln). The largest investment inflows came from Luxembourg (EUR 143.7 mln), Sweden (EUR 126.1 mln) and Poland (EUR 121 mln). The largest negative investment flows came from Hong Kong (minus EUR 46.4 mln) and Australia (minus EUR 34.8 mln). In terms of activity, the largest investment inflows were directed to manufacturing companies (EUR 212 mln) and companies engaged in financial and insurance activities (EUR 141 mln), while the largest negative flows were directed to companies engaged in professional, scientific and technical activities (minus EUR 18.2 mln).

  • FDI income from non-resident investment amounted to EUR 496 mln in III quarter 2019, a y-o-y decrease of 14.5% (see Chart 1). The largest share of FDI income consisted of reinvestments.

  • Cumulative FDI in Lithuania amounted to EUR 18.2 bn, or 38.2% of GDP, as of 30 September 2019. FDI per capita amounted to an average of EUR 6,509 (as of 30 September 2018 – EUR 6,088). The largest FDI in Lithuania came from Sweden (EUR 3.1 bn), Estonia (EUR 3 bn) and the Netherlands (EUR 2.5 bn) (see Chart 2). As of 30 September 2019, companies engaged in financial and insurance activities were predominantly financed by investments from Sweden and Estonia.

  • In III quarter 2019, the flow of Lithuania’s direct investment (DI) abroad amounted to EUR 43.4 mln due to an increase in debt instruments and reinvestment. The largest investment flows were directed to Estonia (EUR 36.4 mln). In terms of activity, the largest investment flows were directed to companies engaged in professional, scientific and technical activities (EUR 41.5 mln).

  • DI income earned by Lithuanian investors abroad amounted to EUR 31.9 mln in III quarter 2019. Latvia’s DI accounted for the largest share of DI income (EUR 16.6 mln).

  • Lithuania’s cumulative DI abroad amounted to EUR 4.2 bn as of 30 September 2019. Lithuania’s DI in the EU Member States accounted for 88.9 %, in euro area countries – 71.1 % of Lithuania’s total DI abroad.
