Latvia must actively and purposefully continue reforms in the judicial system, combating corruption, education, managing state and municipal companies, introducing e-administration, improving the country's business environment and other areas so that they would match the standards and principles of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), OECD Secretary General Jose Angel Gurria told Economy Minister Daniels Pavluts.

Gurria lauded Latvia's achievements, especially in overcoming the fallout from the crisis, and emphasized that Latvia's experience is valuable for other countries. He also invited Latvia to be more active when participating in the organization's task forces and projects, Pavluts' press secretary Daiga Grube informed Nozare.lv.

OECD Chief Economist Pier Carlo Padoan stressed that Latvia has done an important job, restoring the country's economic growth, investors' trust and the quality of its business environment. He also appreciated Latvia's work on the National Industrial Policy, clearly highlighting the country's economic policy and the required instruments, informs LETA.

Pavluts informed that Latvia aims to ensure competitive business and investment environments, reviewing its support policy to energy production from renewable energy resources and cogeneration, to create a technologically neutral, sustainable and transparent support system based on multiple principles. Padoan supported Latvia's long-term energy strategy and its principles and emphasized that purposeful reforms in Latvia's education will be decisive for the country's further economic development and international competitiveness.

To emphasize and confirm Latvia's readiness to join the OECD, Pavluts met with several ambassadors to the OECD and OECD directorate heads. The minister urged to support Latvia's OECD membership during the organization's expansion next spring. Pavluts emphasized that Latvia's accession to the OECD will be an important step in the country's further economic development, improving Latvia's investment environment, making it easier to access loan and financial markets and providing greater opportunities to defend Latvia's interests on the international level.
