In the nine months of 2020, 406.7 thousand passengers arrived at and departed from Latvian ports, which is 51.2% less than in the nine months of 2019. Passenger turnover at Riga Passenger Terminal comprised 276.7 thousand passengers, which is 55.3% less, at Ventspils port – 106.3 thousand passengers, a drop of 42%, but at Liepāja port – 23.7 thousand passengers, 21.1% less than a year ago.

Cancelation of international passenger traffic due to Covid-19 pandemic significantly affected passenger turnover at ports. Mostly Riga Passenger Terminal was affected by the change in the number of passengers, as ferries scheduled are mainly oriented to passenger traffic. Thus, in the 2nd quarter passenger turnover in ferry traffic reduced by 95.2%, as traffic of ferries between Riga and Stockholm was closed, allowing just a couple of repatriation trips. In the 3rd quarter situation at Riga Passenger Terminal improved as new ferry routes to Helsinki and Mariehamn and, therefore, number of passengers increased and its drop in the 3rd quarter fell to 39.6%. In the 3rd quarter passenger turnover with these two Finnish ports comprised 95.5% of the total passenger turnover at ports.
