Latvia lags behind its neighbors by digital quality of life

Latvia took the 27th position among 85 countries of the world in the Digital Quality of Life Index, lagging behind its neighbors Estonia (13th) and Lithuania (21st), according to a study by privacy protection company Surfshark, cites LETA.

Countries have been assessed in the following criteria - availability of internet prices, internet speed and stability, cyber security, electronic infrastructure, electronic government services and others.


The countries with the highest digital quality of life are Denmark, Sweden, Canada, France, Norway, the Netherlands, the UK, Israel, Japan and Poland. Germany ranked 16th, the US - 22nd, China - 38th and Russia - 42nd.


Latvia and Lithuania have been among 13 countries who unexpectedly exceeded the predicted digital quality of life in cyber security and availability of internet prices. Lithuania ranked 3rd in cybersecurity, Estonia ranked 4th, while Latvia was in the 20th position in this section.




In relation to electronic infrastructure, Estonia ranked 14th among 85 countries, Latvia - 18th and Lithuania - 20th. Assessing internet quality - Estonia ranked 10th, Lithuania - 14th, and Latvia - 22nd.


The authors of the study underscored that internet infrastructure stability had turned out to be crucial during the Covid-19 crisis when meetings in person had to be replaced with videoconferences.


The researchers studied digital quality of life in 85 countries of the world with more than 5.5 billion residents.
