Coronavirus map project manager takes down website in protest against Estonian government

The maintainer and project manager of the koroonakaart.ee website, which had been operating in cooperation with the Estonian Health Board, took down the website in protest against the Estonian government, informs LETA/BNS.

"The current government coalition has shown time and time again that, to them, some people are more equal than others. During a global pandemic, when families all around Estonia are suffering, the government’s most pressing issue is whether or not two people who love each other can get married," Keegan McBride said on the website.

"This portal was originally built to support the government in providing clear and accurate information to the Estonian people. However, as project manager, a foreigner, and supporter of LGBTQ rights, I can no longer keep this site up and running in support of a government that does not uphold the Estonian Constitution or help to create a more tolerant and accepting society," he added.

Koroonakaart.ee was created in spring at the "Hack the Crisis" hackathon held by Garage48 and the website collected information related to the COVID-19 virus.

Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) junior research fellow Keegan McBride, who is originally from the United States, was first mentioned in media in 2019 as the so-called whistleblower to draw attention to alleged misuse of EU money at TalTech.
