New version of ID software enables digital signing with Smart-ID

BC, Tallinn, 05.02.2020.Print version
With the new version of the DigiDoc4 ID software, documents can be signed in addition to the electronic ID-card and Mobile-ID also with Smart-ID, the Estonian Information System Authority (RIA) informed LETA.

Mark Erlich, head of the electronic identity department at RIA, said that the terms of the agreement with SK ID Solutions, the provider of the Smart-ID service, were agreed upon last year, after which work to develop Smart-ID support for the ID software began.

"We have had good cooperation with RIA, and this is a nice birthday present for Smart-ID that has just turned three. We are also glad that RIA has taken into use an additional security measure, meaning that in signing with Smart-ID the app asks the user to choose the right one from among three check codes -- this will encourage also other e-services to adopt it," Liisa Lukin, manager for value added services at SK ID Solutions, said.

Digital signatures can be given with DigiDoc4 by those users of Smart-ID who created their account after Nov. 8, 2018.

The reason for this is that starting from that date, Smart-ID was introduced on the list of qualified electronic signature creation devices. Users who have created their account earlier must delete their Smart-ID account and create a new one in  order to be able to start signing documents with Smart-ID.

Non-corporate entities can sign documents in reasonable numbers via DigiDoc4 using a Smart-ID. Corporate customers are required to conclude an agreement with SK ID Solutions for the use of Smart-ID via DigiDoc4. With default settings, documents can be signed using a Smart-ID only by holders of an Estonian personal identification code.

Users who have concluded an agreement with the service provider can also sign documents with a Latvian or a Lithuanian personal identification code.

The recently completed software is also the last version of the software that supports the older operating systems Windows 7 and macOS 10.11.

RIA's DigiDoc mobile app does not support Smart-ID at this point.
