Number of cargo and passenger transportation companies in Latvia up 3.5% in 2019

Last year, 5,185 companies were engaged in transportation of cargos and passengers, which is by 3.5% more than in 2018, said, a representative of the Road Transport Directorate Zane Plone said LETA.

She said that there are 24,110 transport vehicles registered in Latvia for transportation of cargos and passengers, up 1% from 2018. The biggest demand there has been for transportation permits to Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Turkey and Poland.

Of the 5,185 licenses issued for cargo and passenger transportation, 86.1% are issued for transportation of international cargos, 5.3% for transportation of cargos in the territory of Latvia, 8.4% for international passenger transportation, and 0.2% for inland passenger transportation.


Last year the number of registered trucks increased by 1.2%, and the number of buses dropped by almost 2%.   


Plone explained that in order to conduct international cargo transportation, permits from the other country should be received. Last year permits were exchanged with 33 countries. Latvian transportation companies were issued 86,669 one-time international cargo transportation permits, including 59,586 permits for cargo transportation to Russia, 20,787 permits to Belarus, 1,800 permits to Kazakhstan, 1,339 permits to Ukraini, 558 permits to Turkey, and 544 permits to Poland.
