Estonia: New car sales up 4.7% on year in 2019
BC, Tallinn, 07.01.2020.Print version
A total of 26,589 brand new passenger cars were sold in Estonia in 2019, 4.7% more than in 2018, inormed LETA/BNS.
In December 2019, new car sales exceeded the corresponding figure in the same month the year before by 69.5%, the Estonian association of car dealers and service companies AMTEL said.
AMTEL manager Arno Sillat said that the figures correspond to those projected by the association.
AMTEL foresaw the slight decline in new car sales over the first few months of 2019, and also projected the year-end sales growth, which was driven by the looming tightening of carbon dioxide regulation for car manufacturers, who as a result began focusing on smaller cars and electromobility and adjusting the prices of their larger-engined vehicles, Sillat added.
The best-selling segment in 2019 was medium-sized SUVs, which accounted for 25.6% of the total number of new cars sold in Estonia. Smaller medium cars and small SUVs accounted for respectively 23% and 16.8% of sales.
New hybrid cars sold during the year numbered 2,729, electric cars 77, CNG powered cars 579, motorcycles 639 and mopeds 544.
The list of manufacturers was topped by Toyota with 4,248 new cars sold, followed by Skoda with 3,703 and Renault with 2,432 units. Of models, Toyota RAV4 was the number one with 1,556 units, followed by Toyota Corolla with 1,273, and Skoda Octavia with 1,239 units.
Sales of new utility vehicles declined 9.5% on year to 5,637 units. Citroen was the number one with 958 units sold, followed by Peugeot and Renault with respectively 809 and 605 units.
Scania topped the list for trucks with 455 units sold. Volvo and Mercedes-Benz were in places two and three with 246 and 94 trucks sold, respectively.
