The Saaremaa municipality government in Estonia has announced an international tender for a contract to operate regular ferry services between the port of Montu in Saaremaa and the Latvian port of Ventspils during the summer months of each of the next three years, informs LETA/BNS.

"International transport connections are of utmost importance for ensuring the development of Saare County," Municipality Mayor Mikk Tuisk said in a press release on Wednesday.

"While Saare County is a popular travel destination both within Estonia as well as for neighboring countries, there are no regularly functioning international transport connections that would enable better connections both for business operators as well as those who visit the county for the purpose of tourism," the municipality mayor said.

Regular ferry services between Montu and Ventspils during the summer months were operated from 2005 to 2008.

The tender is for a contract to operate the services from June 1, 2021 to Aug. 31, 2023. The successful tenderer must operate at last two return trips per week in the three summer months of each of the three years.

The exact period when the service is to be operated, its timetable and volumes are to be agreed in the course of negotiations to be held as part of the tender procedure.

The vessel used for the service must be capable of carrying passengers and vehicles alike.

The deadline of submissions is Dec. 4.
