A total of 18,503 new passenger cars were registered in Lithuania in the first half of 2020, down 29.2% from 26,152 in the same period last year, the market research company Autotyrimai said LETA/BNS.

In June alone, new car registrations plunged by 39.3% y-o-y to 3,003 units, it said, citing data from the state car registration company Regitra.

“Even though the rate of decline was considerably smaller compared to April (-67.3%) or May (-54%), the market continued to suffer from the fallout of the lockdown introduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Autotyrimai said.

The market research company once again noted a high rate of re-exports in June, with 718 registered new cars (including 668 Fiats and 32 Jeeps) de-registered by the end of the month and additional 37 new cars expected to be de-registered in the near time.

Last month, the top three brands of new personal cars included Fiat (917 new cars registered), Toyota (425) and Volkswagen (345). BMW and Mercedes-Benz led the premium segment with 49 new cars of each brand registered in June.
