Estonian ministry to give municipalities EUR 15 mln under transit roads program

BC, Tallinn, 23.10.2017.Print version
Estonia's Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Kadri Simson on October 19th signed a regulation on investment support for local roads that will see 15 million euros disbursed to municipalities over a period of two years, writes LETA/BNS.

The minister said in a press release that when the roads of a municipality suffer from extra wear and tear from the movement of heavy vehicles, the state must find a possibility to support these municipalities.

"The program of transit roads gives municipalities a new opportunity to maintain the roads that need maintenance and to simultaneously give a boost to local business. It is possible for all municipalities across Estonia to get the support, and I hope that municipalities will use that possibility," Simson said.

The purpose of the program is to support municipalities whose roads suffer from significant additional traffic load in addition to local traffic. Additional traffic load may result from traffic to and from a sea port or a border crossing point located in the territory of the municipality. The most frequent reason for additional traffic load is that a local road connects two national roads.

The subsidy is capped at one million euros per project for the transit road subsidy and at 100,000 euros per project for the subsidy directed towards enterprise related roads. The purpose of the latter subsidy is to support municipalities in improving the condition of immediate access roads to company sites.
