Broadcasting watchdog repeatedly fines Baltkom Radio in Latvia for illegal pre-election campaign

The National Electronic Mass Media Council (NEPLP) in Latvia has fined Baltkom Radio for three violations of pre-election campaign law, informs LETA.

A fine worth EUR 10,500 has been imposed for illegal campaign for Honor to Serve Riga (GKR) and Alternative parties and their candidates.


On July 28, 2020, GKR candidate for the Riga City Council elections Natalija Tumsevics-Ergle was interviewed in Baltkom Rits program. She was announced as the patron of the Riga Ball, but still promoted her party and candidates of the list. EUR 5,000 have been imposed for the violation.


On July 7, GKR candidate Natalija Abola was interviewed in the same program, announces as a TV journalist and producer, but actually spoke about her party and other candidates of the party. Another EUR 5,000 fine was slapped for this violation.


On August 12 and August 19, Baltkom promoted Alternative party in an illegal way, and a EUR 500 fine has been imposed for this violation.


As reported, NEPLP already earlier fined Baltkom Radio with EUR 11,400 for illegal pre-election campaign.
