Retailers in Latvia will be allowed to sell motor products, press, pet food and e-tickets also on weekends and public holidays, the government decided on December 4th, cites LETA.

The decision was made after Cabinet ministers were surveyed about the Economics Ministry's proposal to make some adjustments to the list of goods that retailers are allowed to sell on weekends and public holidays during the state of emergency.

Under the government's latest decision, fuel filling stations will be allowed to sell goods that are necessary for the safe use of automobiles and whose unavailability can pose road traffic safety risks.

However, in order to avoid crippling competition with other retailers, the filling stations will be banned from selling alcohol and tobacco.

The government also decided to allow sale of newspapers and magazines so that people can access the latest information.

Selling public transport tickets will be allowed as well on weekends and holidays to make sure people can buy the tickets not only on public transport but also in stores.

The government also allowed selling pet food in stores on weekends and public holidays.

At the same time, the Economics Ministry indicated that retail trade on the internet will not be restricted on weekends and holidays.

As reported, the government decided on December 1 to extend the state of emergency over Covid-19 until January 11, introducing at the same a number of restrictions, including on retail trade.

Under the government's decision, during the state of emergency, retailers are only allowed to sell food and hygiene goods on weekends and public holidays. Pharmacies, including veterinary pharmacies, are allowed to work on weekends and holidays as well.
