Retail trade turnover grew by 6.4 % in October in Latvia

Calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that, compared to October 2019, in October 2020 total retail trade turnover rose by 6.4 %. Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 7.2 %. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) increased by 2.2 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 16.4 %.

As compared to October 2019, the most notable turnover growth was registered in retail sale of electrical household appliances in specialised stores (of 18.8 %), retail trade in pharmaceutical and medical goods (13.1 %) and retail sale of hardware, instruments, construction materials and sanitary equipment (7.3 %). Significant turnover drop was registered in stalls or markets (of 33.3 %), retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (7.9 %) and retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (7.2 %).


Total retail trade turnover at current prices increased by 4.1 % (not taking into account the calendar influence).




Compared to September, in October 2020, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises rose by 0.9 %, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices. Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 1.6 %. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) increased by 0.2 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 1.1 %.


As compared to the previous month, the most notable turnover growth was registered in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (of 9.6 %). The largest turnover drop was registered in retail sale in stalls or markets (of 6.8 %), retail sale in non-specialised stores selling mainly non-food products (5.6 %) and retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (5.4 %).


Compared to September, in October 2020 the total retail trade turnover at current prices (not taking into account seasonality) increased by 1.8 %.

Data published might be revised in the following months if additional information will be obtained from stores.


According to methodology of the survey, data on the total net turnover of enterprises also include transactions outside main activity. In some cases these transactions (for example, wholesale) may significantly affect turnover changes in the sector.
