The construction of a multifunctional water sports center has on Friday been started in Lithuania's second-largest city of Kaunas, on the Nemunas Island, with the burial of a symbolic capsule, informs LETA/BNS.

"The Nemunas Island is becoming a place for entertainment, sports and spending leisure time, and in fact we though for some time what to build more for apartment buildings, skyscrapers or anything else not to be built after us," Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijosaitis told journalists. "And we don’t have a good normal pool in Kaunas. So we will be able to hold Olympics in here, whatever you like, as we will have ten lanes and a 50-meter pool meeting all Olympic standards."

The complex will be built by Conresta for 25.8 million euros over the next 18 months.

Matijosaitis says the local municipality could build the complex independently, adding, however, that the government also plans to take part in.

The multifunctional water sports center will rise next to the Zalgiris Arena. It will house a 50-meter pool with ten lanes and 500 seats for the audience. It will be suitable for international and national competitions. The second smaller pool will be used for swimming lessons for children. The complex will meet FINA requirements.

The new complex will also have a SPA zone for 300 people and a 200-place sports club.
