R&D spending up 13.5% in Lithuania in 2019

483.9 million euros was spent on research and experimental development (R&D) in Lithuania in 2019, up 13.5% from 2018. And the R&D-to-GDP ratio went up to 1 percent, from 0.94 percent in 2018.

The business sector accounted for the majority of R&D spending last year, amounting to 208.5 million euros, or 43% of the total. R&D spending in the higher education sector stood at 176.8 million euros (36.5%), and 99 million euros (20.5%) was spent in the government sector, Lithuania's statistics service, Statistics Lithuania, said.


In terms of funding sources, business funds accounted for the majority (33.8%) of the total R&D spending, followed by state budget funds (32.4 percent), foreign funds (30.7%) and higher education and nongovernmental organizations (3.2%).
