Grains push Klaipeda port cargo volumes up 11% in August

The Lithuanian seaport of Klaipeda handled 30.2 million tons of cargo in January-August, 2020, down of 3.5% year-on-year, the port authority said on Wednesday. In August alone, handling volumes increased by 11%, reports LETA/BNS.

In August alone, however, handling volumes rose 11% to 4.3 million tons as the volumes of handled bulk cargoes jumped 21% to 2.3 million tons, from the same period last year.


A total of 594,000 tons of grains were loaded onto shipped last month, which is the best monthly result over the past five years. Last August gets among the five best months in terms of grain handling volumes in the port's history,


In comparison to other eastern Baltic ports, Klaipeda scores above the average in terms of handling volumes as handling volumes in eastern Baltic ports dropped around 10% on average in the first eight months of this year.


The total number of ship calls in Klaipeda went down by 5.1% to 4,300 and passenger numbers dropped 51.4% to 151,400 passengers, mainly due to the coronavirus pandemic affecting the cruise season.


A total of 66 cruise ships have arrived in Klaipeda this year, brining around 80.000 tourists.
