Employment agency observes positive trends in Latvian job market

The highest number of new jobless people was registered in March and April, while in August this number returned back to usual, and there are also other positive trends observed in the job market, LETA learned from the State Employment Agency.

In April, about 15,800  persons were registered as unemployed, while in August this number dropped to 6,800 compared to 7,900 in January and 6,100 in February.


The agency has observed also other positive trends, including increase of the number of registered vacancies. In April, employees registered about 4,800 new vacancies, while in August this number rose to 6,500. Most of the vacancies were in such areas as construction and real estate, manufacturing, services, transport and logistics. In total, at the end of August, there were about 18,000 vacancies available.


At the same time, in early September, the registered unemployment level in the country was 8.2%, down 0.4 percentage points from early August. In early September, NVA had registered 75,013 unemployed people, and the number of jobless people dropped by 2,985 over the month.


NVA so far has received announcement from 50 employers on collective redundancies in relation to Covid-19 crisis. Employers reported on laying off 5,322 employees. The companies represent such sectors as transport and storage, administrative and service sector, accommodation and catering, wholesale and retail, art, entertainment and recreation and others.


In August 6,611 people registered with the NVA found jobs, and in the first eight months of this year 39,124 people found jobs.
