Euro Rail Cargo launches freight deliveries from Russia to Latvian ports

BC, Riga, 24.08.2020.Print version
Euro Rail Cargo has started offering rail freight deliveries from Russia to Latvian ports, the company's board chairman Ivars Sormulis informed LETA.

He indicated that launching the rail freight business was a legally and technologically complex, which took several years of hard work.

Sormulis noted that until now Latvijas Dzelzcels (Latvian Railway, LDZ) has been the only company shipping rail freight from Russia to Latvia, but that Euro Rail Cargo has now concluded all the necessary agreements with the parties concerned and started transporting rail freight across the Russian-Latvian border.

The emergence of competition in rail freight transportation is not only a big step towards an advanced, open European transport system but also a significant event for the Latvian transport industry at a time of shrinking freight turnover.

Sormulis said that freight owners will now have the opportunity to choose the best price and solution, while increased competition in the freight shipping market will benefit the Latvian economy in general.

Euro Rail Cargo belongs in equal parts to Sormulis' Locomotive Traction Operator and the Dutch company RZDL Multimodal. Cypriot citizen Sergei Maltsev is the beneficial owner of Euro Rail Cargo.
