The Estonian government supports the organization of WRC Rally Estonia and the Ironman international competition in Estonia in September if the organizers of the events implement appropriate measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, informs LETA/BNS.

According to Minister of Culture Tonis Lukas, in order to successfully and safely organize major competitions, it is extremely necessary to implement measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 appropriate to their nature during said major competitions, government spokespeople said.

"The alternative risk prevention measures approved at the Cabinet meeting concern in particular the monitoring of the risk of infection, but also the minimal contact of athletes and their team members with the local population. Our goal is the safety of both residents and athletes," Lukas said.

Top athletes, background forces, organizers involved in the WRC rally, who arrive in Estonia from countries with an infection rate higher than 16, must take the COVID-19 PCR method test up to 72 hours before leaving the country of residence or home country and have a written certificate confirming a negative result in English.

Upon arrival in Estonia, all participants in the competition, regardless of the infection rate of the country of origin, must take the COVID-19 test by PCR method within 24 hours at the latest and meet the requirements of self-isolation until the test results come in and do so with the help and coordination of the competition organizer.

Upon receiving a negative test result, the accreditation of the competition will be issued and the persons may start the activities related to the competition.

While in Estonia, all foreign guests, including the organizers, must monitor their health every day and commit to being ready to participate in random checks.

While in Estonia, people must stay in so-called competition isolation, which means that they can only engage in activities related to competitions and avoid all out-of-competition contacts. For example, public transport is not allowed, they are only allowed to move in competition areas and it is forbidden to move in crowded places and other such activities.

Only so-called green country competitors can participate in the Ironman competition. The exception is the elite class athletes of the 70.3 distance and their background forces, a total of about 60 people, who also have to fulfill additional confidence measures.

In addition, the organizers of the competitions have established several rules of their own in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 at these competitions and in Estonia and these will be updated as necessary on an ongoing basis according to the spread of the virus.

The government and event organizers are constantly monitoring the spread of the virus both in the world in general and in Estonia, and based on this, will operatively make decisions related to competitions and audience access in the future.
