Latvian rail company to expand range of services

BC, Riga, 22.07.2020.Print version
Latvijas Dzelzcels (Latvian Railways, LDz) national rail company plans to expand the range of services under its new business model by adding freight forwarding by sea and road, as well as services of terminals and warehouses, LDz board chairman Maris Kleinbergs told journalists, cites LETA.

He indicated that already at the end of last year it became clear that rail freight volumes were going to drop significantly. "Already last year's results were the lowest in the past 18 years in terms of freight. This year, the drop from the respective period of last year is 52 percent," Kleinbergs said, adding that already last year LDz started to look for solutions to change this situation and to adapt to the new market situation.

"As we were working on the new business model, we had to choose between two directions - one option was to give up rail transportation altogether and become a company maintaining infrastructure. Another option was to develop a business- and development-oriented enterprise. We chose the second option, and now were are working so that we can head in that direction," said Kleinbergs.

He said that until now LDz has been involved in rail forwarding, rail transport and infrastructure maintenance, as well as repairs of rolling stock, but the company now intends to broaden the range of its services by offering also freight forwarding by sea and road, as well as services of terminals and warehouses. "These will be the basic things in the new business model. We are working now to implement it," the LDz head informed.

LDz plans to focus on multimodal logistics services, covering the full range of transportation and logistics services.
