International airport Riga in July might serve about 130,000 passengers compared to 55,000 a month ago, said the airport's board chairwoman Laila Odina in an interview with the Latvian commercial TV3 television today, cites LETA.

She said that the number of passengers is gradually increasing.

In June the airport served 55,000 passengers, which was just 7 percent of the passengers served last June, while in July the number of passengers could reach 130,000 which would be 15 percent of the passengers in the respective months in 2019.

Odina said that the airport this year might serve in total of 2.2 million passengers which would be 20 percent of all the passengers served in 2019.

At this point, the airport might start gradually recruiting back employees who were fired in spring. Odina said that the airport laid off 350 employees in spring due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

As reported, Riga Airport's passenger turnover amounted to 7.798 million passengers last year, an increase of 10.5 percent on 2018, while in the first quarter this year, the airport had 1.251 million passengers, a decrease of 12.6 percent as compared to the first quarter of 2019.

Riga Airport is the largest aviation hub in the Baltics.
