The Midas, a vessel of the new freight shipping ferry line Baltic Link, arrived in Riga after its first trip on Monday, Freeport of Riga representative Liene Ozola informed LETA.

The ferry will be carrying ro-ro (transport vehicles) cargo between Riga and Oxelosund in Sweden three times a week - on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The Baltic Link ferry line is operated by Wagenborg Shipping Sweden, which is expanding its network of ro-ro ferry lines in the Baltic Sea.

Viesturs Zeps, chairman of the Freeport of Riga Board, said that considering the specifics of competition in the ferry business and the location of Riga port, the arrival of a new ferry line in Riga is a very welcome event.

"Latvian cargo transportation companies are being offered another competitive logistics route to Scandinavian countries, while in the port of Riga the range of services is being expanded. This will allow to attract new clients to Riga port and increase cargo turnover," said Zeps.

The vessel Midas is a 108.5 meters long and 17 meters wide ro-ro cargo ship built in 1990 and currently sailing under the flag of Finland. Wagenborg Shipping Sweden said that if cargo volumes grow, the Midas might be replaced with a larger ferry.
