Tallinn planning to build 13.5-km green corridor for EUR 1.3 mln
The key objective of the project is to offset the negative environmental effects caused by urban mobility, spokespeople for the Tallinn city government said.
The city government added that developing Tallinn's green infrastructure supports the capital city's bid to win the European Green Capital Award. Deputy Mayor of Tallinn Andrei Novikov said that according to feedback by the award committee, the winner must set an example to other cities.
Novikov said that as part of the project, innovation procurement will be organized in order to commission innovative green infrastructure solutions for a pilot area. The solutions include prototypes for lighting, pavements, crossings and signage, the functioning and effectiveness of which will also be tested.
"The best prototypes can then be also be used in Tallinn's other public spaces in the future," he said.
The 13.5-kilometer pilot area to be built in Tallinn will connect altogether six city districts -- Central Tallinn, North Tallinn, Kristiine, Haabersti, Mustamae and Nomme.
With the project, residents of the said city districts will gain a direct non-motorized traffic route to the city center. The project area is a corridor of pollinators of city-wide importance, which will be retained with the help of landscaping solutions.
Project partners include Helsinki's innovation enterprise Forum Virium Helsinki and the Stockholm Environment Institute. Financing by the European Regional Development Fund totals close to 500,000 euros and the total budget of the project amounts to 1.3 million euros. The budget of the Tallinn project is 522,000 euros, which consists of 444,000 euros in foreign support and 78,000 euros in own financing.
