The Tallinn city government on Wednesday gave the green light to the construction of a tramway linking the Rail Baltic passenger terminal in the area of Ulemiste near Tallinn Airport with the terminal A of the Old City Harbor, the cost of the project is estimated to be up to 15 to 20 mln euros, informed LETA/BNS.

With the existing infrastructure, links can be ensured between the airport, Rail Baltic and the Old City Harbor, Deputy Mayor of Tallinn Andrei Novikov said.

Preliminary procurement of the project will be announced in May with the design stage to be carried out in 2021 and construction in 2022 and 2023. According to preliminary work schedule, construction can be completed by late 2023.

New tram stops are planned to be constructed between the Viru shopping mall and Tallink City Hotel, and near the Admiralty basin and Linnahall arena.

The tramway is planned to run along Gonsiori, Laikmaa and Hobujaama streets, across Ahtri and Laeva streets to Kuunari Street and along Kai Street to terminal A, turning back along Logi, Rumbi and Kursi streets via Pohja and Mere boulevards, where it will link up with the exising tramway network.

The A and B terminals of the Old City Harbor will be connected by a bridge, the procurement for which has already been announced, to ensure access from the tramway to both terminals.

The city of Tallinn also intends to increase the speed of the trams, and to that end carry out a number of technical updates when building the tram corridor, which the existing routes do not have. Said updates are also planned to be introduced in the construction of other new tramway sections.
