Lithuania's wind power output hits all-time record in 2019

Lithuania's wind power generation hit an all-time record last year thanks to windy weather and improving technologies, the Lithuanian Wind Power Association (LVEA) said LETA/BNS.

"The new record was mainly due both to the extremely windy weather in the first and last quarters of the year and to the ever-improving technical reliability of wind turbines," LVEA Director Aistis Radavicius said.

"In March, for example, production reached an all-time monthly high of around 173 GWh," he added.

The director expects wind generation to continue growing in the years to come, with the period between 2021 and 2023 likely to see a new boom in the construction of new turbines.

Lithuanian wind power plants generated a total of 1.453 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in 2019, a rise of almost 28 percent from 1.139 TWh in 2018, according to the association.

Twenty-three wind farms with a total capacity of 480 megawatts (MW) currently operate in Lithuania. The country's overall installed capacity, including small-scale wind turbines, amounts to 533 MW.
