International airport Riga last year served 27,300 tons of cargos, which is almost half of the air cargos in the Baltic states, the airport's representative Laura Karnite reported LETA/BNS.

44.5% of the cargos were postal shipments.

The airport's board chairwoman Ilona Lice said that development of the cargo segment is among the airport's priorities.

"Last year construction of a new cargo platform has been started which will allow to double the capacity in cargo service and make the Riga airport more attractive to air cargo transportation companies across the world," said Lice, adding that at the end of last year the airport signed an agreement with DHL logistics company on construction of the regional DHL shipment processing and logistics center in the territory of the airport.

"In order to expand the route network in new markets, the airport will continue work on development of long-distance flights both in the passenger and cargo segment," said Lice, adding that the airport's target markets are the US, China and other Asian countries.

The airport also has launched a regular cargo transportation program from China.

As reported, in 2018, the Riga airport handled 28,256 tons of cargo, up 10.7% y-o-y.

International airport Riga is the largest air traffic hub in the Baltic states.
