Lithuanian MEP: minimum salary increase is at expense of municipalities

BC, Vilnius, 26.09.2014.Print version
After the Government decided to increase the minimum monthly salary to LTL 1,035 (EUR 300), member of the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union, Member of the European Parliament Bronis Rope addressed Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius claming that the decision has not been coordinated with municipalities beforehand and will rest on their shoulders, reports LETA/ELTA.

"Increase of the minimum salary and reduction of social exclusion are welcomed. However, it should be noted that the decision is made at the expense of municipalities. This way Lithuanian and international laws are violated," said Rope.

According to the politician, EUR 300 salary looks nice but rounding numbers should not be the main concern of the Government (currently the minimum monthly salary is EUR 290 - ELTA). Member of the EP says that municipalities are indebted more than LTL 400 million (EUR 116 million), hence the Government has to consult them before making any decisions and to compensate for the growing liabilities.

"Article 9 of the European Charter of Local Self-Government stipulates that financial resources of local authorities have to correspond with set responsibilities. The Charter also obliges the Government to consult in an appropriate manner when planning and deciding over issues related to self-government. Clearly it is not being done in Lithuania. While single-sided decisions of the central government restrict financial capabilities of municipalities and disrupt citizens' trust in local authorities," said Bronis Rope.

If the Government is not going to provide funds to compensate for expenses, the politician has not excluded the possibility to take resolute steps at the European Parliament and bring to attention the fact that Lithuania cannot violate international commitments that it itself ratified.
