Lithuanian PM: corruption must be fought harder

BC, Vilnius, 22.04.2014.Print version
Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius is not happy with how corruption is fought in Lithuania. According to the head of the Government, even though indicators are improving, the progress should commence much faster, informs LETA/ELTA.

Presenting the yearly report to the Parliament Butkevicius said that the level of corruption was rather substantial in Lithuania and it was impossible to eliminate by stricter laws alone. Although in corruption perception index Lithuania climbed from 48 spot to 43, the progress should be quicker.

The prime minister also said that the Government is doing all it can to eliminate corruption in the areas where it has been predominant. The Government has been reducing red-tape and administrative hurdles in order for corruption to decrease in business. Butkevicius ensured that manifestations of dishonest practices by officials and their heads will be met strictly.

"Patronage of tenders or investment projects by officials or politicians, on the level of the Parliament, ministries or municipalities, will not be tolerated. By saying this I am not pointing fingers, I just would like to warn that first of all politicians have to show an example of transparency so that we aren't surprised later why our society is so forgiving or liberal towards manifestations of corruption," Butkevicius said.
