Lithuania's Investigation Service: there is huge gap between real, perceived corruption

BC, Vilnius, 14.02.2014.Print version
The Special Investigation Service (STT) believes that the level of corruption perceived by Lithuanians does not correspond to the real situation in the country, while the Anti-Corruption Report of the European Commission actually reflects the opinion of residents, informs LETA/ELTA.

"The Anti-Corruption Report of the European Commission based on data of Eurobarometer is an opinion expressed by people, while having analyzed the data the STT makes a conclusion that there is a huge gap between the perceived and the real corruption, since Lithuanians gain the impression of the spread of corruption from the public sphere, not from their personal experience," said Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius, who met with Director of the STT Saulius Urbonavicius and Chair of the Seimas Anticorruption Commission Vitalijus Gailius on Thursday.

The STT makes this conclusion based on concrete examples, for instance, assessing the impact of corruption on certain institutions, 49% of those polled said corruption is widespread in courts, however, only 4% dealt with courts and only 1% of those polled said they were demanded to pay a bribe.

The prime minister met with the heads of the institutions to discuss the Anti-Corruption Report of the European Commission, its topics and conclusions as well as the situation in Lithuania, the level of corruption and further action of the these institutions in fighting against corruption.
