According to U.S. human rights organisation Freedom House, Estonia continues to be among the states with the highest Internet freedom in the world but has fallen from the top position to the second position in Freedom on the Net study for 2013, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports. Lithuania and Latvia are not included in the study.

The study compared Internet and digital media freedom trends in 60 states of the world.

In case of every state, obstacles to access of the internet, limits on content, including censorship and violations of user rights were observed.

Internet freedom was protected in states that got 0-30 points and missing in states that got 61-100 points. Estonia received 9 points on the 100 points scale and was only behind Iceland that received 6 points. Germany was third with 17 points.

A new report says Internet freedom has deteriorated worldwide in the past year, while activists are finding new ways to counter repressive measures.

Freedom House says new laws controlling web content and increased arrests of social-media users led to a decline in Internet freedom.

The yearly report listed 34 countries as having a decline in Internet freedom, including Vietnam, Ethiopia, India, the United States and Brazil.
