Lithuanians mostly travelled to UK in January-March
Other countries Lithuanians mostly went to were: Poland (31,000 travellers or 11%), Belarus (28,800 or 10.2%), Russia (26,000 or 9.2%), Germany (24,600 or 8.7%) and Latvia (18,700 or 6.6%).
During the first quarter of 2013, 225,400 residents of the country travelled abroad; it increased by 5.7% compared the first quarter of 2012. 54% of travellers were men and 46% of travellers were women.
The number of travels abroad increased by 1.1% in January-March 2013 compared to the same period in 2012.
During the first quarter of 2013, 74% of travels abroad were personal ones, while 26% of travels abroad were business trips. In the first quarter of 2013, personal travels decreased by 1%, whereas business trips increased by 7.3% compared to the corresponding period in 2012.
In the first quarter of 2013 Lithuanians travelling abroad spent LTL 413.7 million (EUR 120 million) or 6.8% more than year-on-year.
According to Lithuanian Department of Statistics, Lithuanian residents mostly travel around the country to visit their friends and relatives.
53% of domestic tourists indicated that the main purpose of travelling was to visit their friends and relatives. Only 3% said that the main purpose of travelling was to go to weekend houses. Recreation, leisure and holiday as the main purpose were indicated by 22%, business by 12%, other purposes by 6% and health promotion by 4% of domestic tourists.
During the travel, 50% of domestic tourists spent the night at friends and relatives, 30% – in hotels and holiday homes, 13% in other places, 4% in sanatoriums and rehabilitation centres, 3% in weekend houses.
Most domestic tourists visited the districts of Vilnius (27%), Klaipeda (19%) Kaunas and Alytus (each 16%). Not so popular were travels to the districts of Utena (6% of local tourists), Siauliai (5%), Panevezys (4%), Telsiai (3%), Marijampole and Taurage (each 2%s).
The most popular vehicle for travelling was a car (84% of residents). 14% of residents travelled by bus, 2% – by train.
