Latvian PM: final decision on pension indexing could be made in August or September

BC, Riga, 29.05.2013.Print version
The final decision on pension indexing could be made in August or September, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (Unity) told the LNT morning show "900 sekundes" today, reports LETA.

"We are moving toward resuming pension indexing this year already, starting with small pensions," said the prime minister.

According to Dombrovskis, pension indexing will not depend on the solution of Liepajas metalurgs problems. Pension indexing must not become a hostage of a few failed businessmen, emphasized the premier.

Later today, the Welfare Ministry will present its proposals on pension indexing.

In April, the Latvian Pensioners' Federation handed in to Saeima more than 106,000 signatures, demanding that pension indexing be resumed in October. The Welfare Ministry has set a task force to assess the federation's demand.

Welfare Minister Ilze Vinkele (Unity) said in an interview with Latvian State Radio last week that, even though pensioners are strongly demanding that indexing of pensions be resumed and these demands are also supported by politicians, the collapse of the joint-stock metallurgical company Liepajas metalurgs may put these plans on hold.
