After a meeting with the new Cabinet led by Social Democrat Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite forecasts that Lithuania could introduce the euro in 2015-2016, however, preparation is needed, writes LETA/ELTA.

"We must prepare for the euro which Lithuania could have in 2015 or 2016," the president said.

PM Butkevicius also confirmed that a fast adoption of the euro would be one of the new Government's priorities.

"The goal is for Lithuania to have the euro in 2015," he said.

As reported, in its economic forecast for 2013 the Bank of Lithuania does not predict entering the eurozone even in 2014.

In order to adopt the euro, Lithuania must comply with the Maastricht criteria. It means that Lithuania's fiscal deficit may not exceed 3% of its GDP, the government's debt may not exceed 60% of an annual GDP, etc.

According to the latest forecast of the Bank of Lithuania, Lithuania's gross domestic product (GDP) that in 2012 grew by 3%, next year will increase by 3.1%. 2012 inflation is predicted to stand 3.2% on increasing prices of food, fuel and industrial goods, while in 2013 it should fall to 2.8%.
