Lithuanian employers, trade unions in favour of minimum wage at EUR 260

Employers and trade unions are in favour of increasing minimum monthly wage up to LTL 900 (EUR 258).

Whereas, the government does not change its position and plans to raise the minimum monthly wage by LTL 50 (EUR 14.3) – up to LTL 850 (EUR 244), reports LETA/ELTA.

This has been made clear on Tuesday, during a trilateral council meeting at the Ministry of Social Security and Labour.

According to President of the Lithuanian Trade Union Confederation (LPSK) Arturas Cerniauskas, the proposed wage of LTL 850 (EUR 244) does not correspond to expectations nor of trade unions, neither of employees.

"The government's position would be too odd if they did not raise [the wage] up to LTL 900 (EUR 258), because the business sector has said that they can and want to pay, trade unions have said that the employees are waiting for this increase," Cerniauskas said.

Cerniauskas explained delays of increasing the wage to be due to approaching elections to the Seimas this autumn. He said that raising the minimum monthly wage has been chosen as a political argument.

If the government does approve of raising minimum monthly wage up to LTL 900 (EUR 258), trade unions are planning to sign a joint agreement with businessmen on increasing the wage up to LTL 900 (EUR 258).

Currently, the minimum monthly wage in Lithuania is LTL 800 (EUR 232) or LTL 670 (EUR 194) after taxes.
