Estonian Prime minister Andrus Ansip summed up the work of the outgoing government for the past four years and stressed that the measures that have been implemented have helped poor people especially, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Ansip said at the last press conference of the outgoing government on Thursday that the government held 216 meetings and that is the first case in Estonia that a government lasts all four years between elections.

Ansip said that the government had to survive the biggest economic crisis since the big depression and he estimated that it coped quite well.

Ansip also listed that in the past four years Estonia joined the Schengen visa area and OSCD. He thanked outgoing interior minister Marko Pomerants “who has been the best interior minister of all times.” “I also thank the ministers who will not continue and who will continue (in the next government – ed.). There is a lot to thank them for.”

Ansip stressed that the number of people living in relative poverty fell considerably: from 19.7% to 15.8%. “These were Riigikogu and government decisions that caused the fall of poverty. First, raising pensions and second, considerable strengthening of the Unemployment Insurance Fund. The measures implemented by the Riigikogu and government have helped poor people especially,” he said.

Ansip said that hopefully the new government’s first meeting will be next Thursday.
