83,200 Lithuanian residents declared emigration in 2010

In 2010, 83, 200 Lithuanian residents declared their emigration, which is by 61,200 more than in 2009. According the data of the Department of Statistics, the rise in the numbers of emigrants was triggered by the compulsory sickness insurance which is obligatory for permanent residents of the country, as the health insurance law stipulates.

What is more, those who had lived abroad before, could have also declared the change of their permanent residence from Lithuania to a foreign country, writes LETA/ELTA.

 

From April to August the flows of emigrants from Lithuania were the highest, with averagely 10,700 residents declaring their leaving per month. In the last 4 months of 2010, the flows of emigration decreased from 8,400 in September to 4,000 in December. Most frequently, the residents decide to leave for the United Kingdom and Ireland.

 

In 2009, more than a third of all emigrants left for the UK, last year the numbers increased as every second emigrant chose the UK. Ireland as the destination was chosen by 14% of all emigrants in 2009, while in 2010 the percentage stood at 18.7. It was noted that the flows of emigrants to Norway increased significantly; Lithuanians also prefer Germany, Spain, the United States of America, Sweden, the Russian Federation and Belarus.
