An average of 500 computers are infected with viruses in Estonia

Information security expert Toomas Lepik estimated that every day an average of 500 computers are infected with viruses.

Toomas Lepik, an expert of the State Informatics Centre’s CERT unit, stated that this number could very well be higher. 500 is the result achieved from a monitoring study done outside Estonia, writes aripaev.ee/LETA.

Lepik said that every week, an average of ten websites that are linked with Estonia are used for organising attacks on computers which will have to be cleaned up after that. The owners of websites do not necessarily know anything about the malicious use of their websites.

When comparing the cyber space in Estonia with the international scene, the expert noted that for every thousand computers, the ones in Estonia cause less problems for the ones abroad than vice versa. At the same time, Estonian cyberspace is an inherent part of the global cyberspace and there is no way to draw any lines there – what is happening globally very much affects the situation in the Estonian cyber realm, he added.
