Manufacturing production in Latvia decreased by 0.6 % in September

Madara Liepiņa, Statistics Latvia, Riga, 03.11.2020.Print version
Data compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in September 2020, compared to September 2019, manufacturing production output (1) according to calendar adjusted data at constant prices decreased by 0.6 %. Total industrial production output decreased by 2.8 %.

Production output decreased in electricity and gas supply - by 22.7 %, with a significant decrease in the volume of electricity produced in combined heat and power plants (CHP) and gas supply to consumers. In turn, in mining and quarrying there was an increase of 21.8 %, which was promoted by favourable weather conditions.

Compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, the production output is still falling sharply in repair and installation of machinery and equipment - by 33.7 % and in manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations. Manufacturing output also decreased in manufacture of textiles - by 14.2 %, manufacture of beverages - by 11.3 % and manufacture of paper and paper products - by 10.9 %.

In turn, production output increase was in the manufacture of machinery and equipment - by 11 %, manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products and in three sectors having the largest share in industrial production - manufacture of wood and wood products and manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (growth of 4.1 % in both) and an increase of 1.5 % in manufacture of food products.

In September 2020, compared to August 2020, manufacturing production output according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices increased by 0.8 %. Production output rise was also in mining and quarrying - by 9.1 %, but in electricity and gas supply there was a drop (of 6.9 %).  Total industrial production output increased by 0.5 %.

Methodological explanations

1 Industrial production is calculated by summing the self-produced products sold and industrial services provided in a given month with the changes in stocks of finished products and work in progress. The industrial production volume index (IPI) describes changes in the volume of industrial production during the reference period in comparison to the base period. IPI is estimated by recalculating the production output indicator at constant prices with the help of producer price indices.

2 Industrial turnover is the self-produced products sold and industrial services provided in a given month. The industrial turnover index measures the monthly development of market demand for industrial goods and services. It is calculated at current prices without excluding price influence. Unlike industrial goods that also include unfinished goods and goods in stock, turnover only includes the goods sold and industrial services provided.
