The number of newly unemployed persons registered during the month was 8,352, which is more than in the previous couple of months, the Unemployment Insurance Fund said.

In total 4,770 people took up employment or started a business with the help of the Unemployment Insurance Fund in September, that figure was smaller in the previous couple of months. East-Viru County had the highest unemployment rate last month at 12.2%, while Jogeva County had the lowest rate at 4.7%.

In September, the total number of job offers available via the Unemployment Insurance Fund was 8,718, and the number of new vacant positions added during the month was 4,757. The number of job offers added during the month was slightly bigger than in August.

Starting from Sept. 1 of this year it is possible for registered unemployed to engage in short-term employment without losing the status of unemployed. That possibility was used by 739 people during the month.

The option was used more actively by women, and the fields of activity where it was used most often was retail and customer service. The biggest numbers of instances of short-term working by unemployed people were registered in Tallinn and Harju County, but the option was used in all of Estonia's 15 counties.
