Lithuanians spending more in Latvia, Estonia

BC, Vilnius, 27.08.2020.Print version
Lithuanian residents spending their holidays in Latvia and Estonia in June and July 2020 spent much more than they did a year ago. Latvians and Estonians also spent more in Lithuania, writes LETA, according to the latest card payment figures from SEB bank.

The figures show that the so-called Baltic Bubble, introduced in early May 2020 when residents of the three countries were allowed to travel within the countries without any restrictions helped mitigate losses for the tourism sector over the loss of foreign tourists.

"Nevertheless, the fact that the number of coronavirus cases has been growing over the past weeks, especially in Lithuania, warns that if such a tendency continues, travelling within the Baltic states will not be that easy," Tadas Povilauskas, chief economist at SEB, said in a statement.

Spending by Lithuanian citizens rose significantly in Estonia in June and July as they used SEB banking cards 32% and 58% respectively more than a year ago. And the value of payments rose 24 and 36% respectively.

Payments in Latvia rose 15% in June and jumped almost 30% in July.

Meanwhile, the value of payments using Estonian SEB banking cards in Lithuania went up by almost 40% in July, from the same month last year.

The value of Lithuanians' payments in Poland dropped 29% in Poland in July.
