The poverty risk level in Lithuania might rise a bit in 2020 and the situation would get worse for pensioners, the country's statistics office, Statistics Lithuania, estimates, having released its first poverty risk projection on Monday, cites LETA/BNS.

Calculated based on 2019 income, the indicators allow to estimate that the poverty risk level could grow by 1.1 percentage points to 21.7 percent this year, and the absolute poverty level should go down by 1.6 percentage points to 6.1 percent.

"Experimental poverty indicators are a projection that is based on 2019 administrative data. (…) Once the methodology stabilizes, experimental statistics will later become official, for example, just like the GDP estimates that are also a projection," the statistics service told BNS.

In terms of age, the biggest poverty risk level will remain in the group of people aged 65 and beyond as it would stand at 39.4 percent (the official 2019 indicators is 31.6 percent).

Statistics Lithuania noted that the official poverty figures for this year will be published next year and will be based on 2019 income, therefore, the state's one-off payouts for children, pensioners, disabled people and for those looking for work will not be reflected in those figures yet.

The latest figures show that the poverty risk level when a person's monthly revenue amounted to 379 euros stood at 20.6 percent last year, and the absolute poverty level (251 euros) amounted to 7.7 percent. These indicators were based on 2018 income.
